Wedding Photographer Hourly Cost in Denver, Colorado

How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost Per Hour in Denver, Colorado?

The answer is a little more complicated than simply dividing a photographer's price by the number of hours they're at your wedding.

Every photographer prices their work differently. Experience, equipment, editing time, travel, insurance, coverage length, and the number of images delivered can all affect the final cost.

I'm Grayson Harris, the photographer behind Grayson Flicks Photography, and I photograph weddings throughout Denver, Colorado. Personally, I don't charge a traditional hourly rate. I price wedding photography based on the full amount of work involved, not just the time I'm physically taking pictures.

Do Wedding Photographers in Colorado Charge by the Hour?

Some do, while others use packages.

My current Colorado wedding photography packages start at:

  • 4 hours — $1,000+

  • 6 hours — $1,400+

  • 8 hours — $1,800+

If you divide those prices by the number of coverage hours, the cost comes out to roughly $225–$250 per hour.

But that doesn't mean a photographer is earning that amount for every hour worked.

Why an Hourly Rate Can Be Misleading

When people think about hourly pricing, they usually think about the hours the photographer is physically at the wedding.

But wedding photography involves much more than that.

Before the wedding, I may be communicating with the couple, reviewing the timeline, preparing equipment, charging batteries, checking memory cards, and planning for different lighting situations.

Then there's travel. I photograph weddings throughout Denver and other areas of Colorado, so some weddings require additional driving, parking, or venue logistics.

After the wedding concludes, one of the biggest parts of the job, maybe even 80% of the photography process, is editing.

I have to sort through the images, choose the strongest photographs, correct color and exposure, edit the final gallery, export everything, back up files, and prepare the images for delivery.

So if you only look at the wedding-day hours, you're seeing just one part of the work.

Why Can Wedding Photography Cost So Much Per Hour?

Sometimes couples are surprised when they calculate what a photographer appears to charge per hour.

That's understandable, especially when the number may be higher than a typical hourly wage in Denver or elsewhere in Colorado.

But photographers also have business expenses to make up for the cost of the service:

Oftentimes, customers may not realize everything that goes into how a photographer sets their pricing. It’s important to understand that photographers typically base their rates on several factors, including the following:

These include purchasing cameras, lenses, lighting, memory cards, batteries, computers, editing software, gallery delivery services, insurance, file storage, and backup equipment.

More expensive equipment can also offer features that clients may not notice at once, such as improved low-light performance, faster autofocus, higher image quality, and backup systems that reduce the risk of losing important moments.

Even so, the equipment isn’t the main reason why a photographer charges a lot. You're also paying for their experience, the time they spend shooting, editing, preparation, communication, and their ability to deliver professional results consistently.

Experience also plays a major role.

Weddings move quickly, and photographers often have to work with changing lighting, large groups, emotional moments, tight timelines, and unexpected situations.

You're not only paying someone to press a shutter button. You're also paying for their ability to recognize the right moment and know how to capture it.

That's why I always recommend reviewing a photographer's wedding portfolio before making a decision.

What Affects Wedding Photography Pricing in Colorado?

Several factors can influence the cost:

  • Experience

  • Photography and editing style

  • Equipment

  • Second photographers

  • Wedding location

  • Travel

  • Coverage time

  • Number of images delivered

  • Turnaround time

  • Insurance and business expenses

Two photographers may both offer six hours of coverage while charging very different prices because the overall service may be very different.

How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need?

Not every couple needs eight, ten, or twelve hours of photography.

Personally, I think four to six hours can be a great fit for many weddings.

Four hours may be enough to photograph the ceremony, family portraits, wedding-party photos, couple portraits, and part of the reception.

Six hours provides more flexibility and may include getting-ready photos, additional reception coverage, speeches, candid moments, or other parts of the day.

I've also written more about shorter coverage in my guide, Can You Hire a Photographer for Just a Few Hours?.

Longer coverage can still make sense, especially for cultural or religious weddings, multi-location weddings, or celebrations with longer ceremonies and traditions.

The best question to ask is:

What parts of the wedding day actually matter most to us?

Once you know that, choosing your photography coverage becomes much easier.

So, What Does a Wedding Photographer Cost Per Hour in Colorado?

There isn't one standard hourly rate for every Colorado wedding photographer.

Some photographers charge by the hour. Others, like me, use packages that account for the full amount of work involved.

At Grayson Flicks, wedding photography currently starts at $1,000 for four hours of coverage.

But I don't view that as simply $250 per hour.

That price also reflects preparation, professional equipment, photographing the wedding, editing, file management, gallery delivery, and the responsibility of documenting moments that can't be recreated.

Instead of asking only, "What is the hourly rate?", I think couples should also ask:

"What am I actually getting for the price I'm paying?"
